The normal explanation of antique is a collectible thing like a piece of furniture or painting that has a high value due to its age, although it does go up and down depending on where it was made, type of product, and when it was made. Cars are exempt to a ‘un official’ one hundred year rule. The additional definition of an antique needs an item be at least 100 years old. The value will fall depending on its condition
An alternative term, antiquities, always looks at to the last pieces of ancient art and daily items from antiquity, which are often archaeological arti-facts. An antiquarian is a someone who collects and reads and writes about antiquities or things from the distant era.
Antique furniture is always what people first think when you say the word, this area of antiques, furniture has real practical purposes as well as collectable cash value. Lots of people who collect use them in their houses, and look after them with the wish that they hold their value or go up. This is the opposite to buying brand new items of furniture, which normally the value goes down immediately its bought. You will recognise that trend from the car market – as soon as you drive a brand new car off the forecourt it losing at least 10% of its value straight away.
